How Does Radiant Heat Work?

Types of Radiant Heating

Hydronic Radiant Heating

The most common type of radiant heating is hydronic radiant heat. This cost-effective heating system uses hydronic heating pumps that circulate heated water from a boiler through tubing under the floor, in walls, or along the ceiling. The tubing is patterned and can be zoned through different areas of the home to regulate individual room temperatures.

Electric Radiant Heating

This type of radiant heating uses electric cables, which are built into the floor. Electric radiant heat systems are the most expensive, as they require the most energy. These heating systems are more commonly used in areas that have concrete, ceramic, or tile flooring. Electric radiant heat works well in bathrooms, kitchens, and basements.

Radiant Heat Panels

Radiant heat panels are low-profile and require minimal labor or materials to install. They use a panel of tubing to circulate hot water from a boiler. This radiant heating system is affordable and a good alternative for adding radiant heat to a designated space.

Air Radiant Heating Systems

As the name implies, air radiant heating units require hot air to transfer heat. Of the standard radiant heating systems, these systems are the least efficient due to air having the lowest capability to move and retain heat.
